The University of Massachusetts at Lowell has appointed Dracutnative Shannah McArdle and Westford native Marc Connolly to keypositions in the athletic department. McArdle was named coordinatorof external affairs and Connolly assistant coach of the men's soccerteam.
McArdle, who played four years of varsity volleyball at UMass-Lowell before graduating in 2000, will primarily oversee themarketing and promotion of all athletic events, as well as eventmanagement. She will also assist with attracting, maintaining, andservicing new corporate sponsors.
McArdle earned her master's degree in education at SpringfieldCollege, where she majored in psychology with a concentration inathletic counseling. While there, she served as an academic/athleticcounselor and assistant coordinator of the Life Skills program, aswell as assistant coach of the women's volleyball team.
During the last two years, she was an athletic counselor at theGary Dineen Hockey School and a graduate associate for the NationalFootball Foundation Center for Youth Development Through Sport.
Connolly is a longtime soccer columnist for ESPN.com, MLSNet.com,and USSoccerPlayers.com, and is no stranger to successful coaching.
For the last four years, he was the head coach of the nationallyrenowned Oakwood Soccer Club in Glastonbury, Conn., where he coachedat the under-15, U-16, and U-19 levels. During his tenure, he guidedthe U-15, U-16, and U-19 teams to Connecticut State Cup championshipsand two bronze medals in Region I competition, which pairs teams fromMaine to Virginia.
This summer, he was a member of ESPN/ABC's broadcast team at theWorld Cup as the chief researcher.
Both McArdle and Connolly live in Lowell.
Coaches named for Lowell Devils
New Jersey of the National Hockey League has announced itscoaching staff for the Lowell Devils, the AHL affiliate that willreplace the Lock Monsters and play at Tsongas Arena. Kurt Kleinendorst , who has played, coached, and served in the frontoffice, will be the franchise's first head coach, and Chris Terreri and Kevin Dean will be his top assistants.
Kleinendorst, 45, will be entering his seventh season with the NewJersey Devils. He served as a member of the team's scouting staff forthe past five seasons, including the last four as special assignmentscout and the 2001-02 season as a pro scout. He was an assistantcoach to Larry Robinson in the 2000-01 season. Before beginning hiscoaching career, he played pro hockey in the Netherlands, Germany,Finland, and the United States. He played at Providence College from1979-1983, and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Famein 1997. He was an All-American, ECAC Player of the Year, and HobeyBaker Award finalist his senior year.
Terreri, 41, is entering his sixth season as goaltending coachwith New Jersey's development team and 16th with the organization. Heplayed 406 games with New Jersey, San Jose, Chicago, and the New YorkIslanders during his 13-season NHL career and was a member of NewJersey's 1995 and 2000 Stanley Cup championship squads, the UnitedStates Olympic team in 1988, and the US World Championship teams in1985, 1986, 1987, and 1997. He, like Kleinendorst, played atProvidence, where he was Hockey East Player of the Year in 1985.
Dean, 37, joins the Devils' coaching staff following aprofessional career that spanned 12 seasons with stops in New Jersey,Atlanta, Dallas, and Chicago. He played at the University of NewHampshire from 1986-90, and in the 1994-95 season played for both AHLCalder Cup champion Albany and NHL Stanley Cup champion New Jersey.
Central Catholic to toast Licare
Former Central Catholic basketball coach Dick Licare will betoasted and roasted at a testimonial Sept. 15 at Harris' Pelham(N.H.) Inn. Licare spent 27 years at Central Catholic beforeresigning at the end of last season and moving to Dallas to devotefull time to his mortgage business. From 1979, when he was hired as a22-year-old fresh out of college, to the time he coached his lastgame, Licare and his Central Catholic teams rang up 447 wins. Histeams also won four Division 1 North and two Eastern Massachusettschampionships and a state title in 1999.

The Lowell Spinners wrap up their regular-season home schedule atLeLacheur Park this week. There's a game today against Oneonta beforea pair at Vermont tomorrow and Tuesday. Then the Spinners play theirfinal three home games Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday against StatenIsland before closing the season with three-game series at StatenIsland and Aberdeen. . . . The New England Riptide, meanwhile,finished the regular season in fourth-place (24-17) and had severalplayers among the National Pro Fastpitch league leaders. Ace pitcherJocelyn Forest tied for the lead in wins with 15 and was third instrikeouts (107) and earned run average (1.29). Infielder LyndseyAngus was third in batting (.345), and she and teammate Tarrah Beyster finished tied for fifth in runs batted in with 23 each.Rookie outfielder Lindy Winkler led the Riptide in hits (42),triples (4), and stolen bases (8). . . . The Association of NewEngland Football Officials will hold its annual classes forprospective officials tomorrow through Oct. 16. Classes are held onsuccessive Mondays, with a final exam Oct. 23.
