Fresh off a 21-8 season and a berth in the NCAA Division 2Tournament, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell's men'sbasketball team is restocking its roster.
The River Hawks have added Methuen High grad Romeo Diaz andformer Lexington High star Scotty Tavares-Taylor of Boston.
The 6-foot-4 Diaz averaged 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 stealsand earned All-Merrimack Valley Conference honors last season forMethuen. His high school career was highlighted with a 51-point, 17-rebound, 11-assist performance against Dracut.
Diaz was 'one of the first recruits I met when I got the jobhere,' said first-year UMass coach Greg Herenda. 'He will fit rightinto our pressing and running system exceptionally well.'
A four-year player at Lexington High, Tavares-Taylor prepped lastyear at the Tilton School, leading the program to a 29-2 record andNew England and national titles. He averaged 11 points, 5 assists,and 2 steals a game.
'We are very excited about Scotty coming to UMass-Lowell,' saidHerenda. 'Not only is he a very good point guard with tremendousability, but he stands for everything that our program is about. Onthe court he will make us that much quicker and deeper at the guardposition. Defensively, he has the ability to take our team toanother level.'
UNH honors three lacrosse players
A trio of local athletes received honors from the University ofNew Hampshire women's lacrosse program, which advanced to the finalof the America East championship.
Senior cocaptain Michaela Hardy of Reading was corecipient of theCoach's Award, given to a player who 'embodies the spirit of UNHwomen's lacrosse with tireless effort and selfless giving to theteam without hesitation.' An All-America East selection, Hardyranked second on the team in goals (33) and points (37). Sheregistered points in 14 of 19 games and notched both her 100thcareer goal and point.
Senior Beth Stankus of Derry, N.H., was named defensive MVP. Shewas sidelined for more than a year by injury, but returned to thestarting lineup this season and led a Wildcat defense that rankedfifth in the nation. Ilana Cohen of Andover was UNH's Rookie of theYear after playing in 18 of 19 games and scoring 11 goals andassisting on four others.
Shribman delivers for Bucknell
Sophomore first baseman Doug Shribman of Marblehead had abreakout season at Bucknell University, where he finished with an 18-game hitting streak that raised his average to .360. Shribman, whowas 5-for-11 with a home run and 5 RBIs in the best-of-three PatriotLeague semifinals vs. Lafayette, led the Bison in hits (59), doubles(15), and walks (20). He had 6 home runs, 42 runs batted in, and a.573 slugging percentage and .462 on-base percentage. He committedjust four errors in 46 games. 'Last season we had a senior playingfirst base so Doug had to wait for his turn, but we've always likedthe way he swung the bat, and while his power did not surprise usthis year, his on-base percentage did. That was a definite bonus,'said Bucknell head coach Gene Depew, who used the 6-4, 225-poundShribman primarily as a pitcher in 2008. 'He has a very live arm andwe're still intrigued by that,' he said of the Belmont Hillgraduate.

Cornell junior Tissy O'Connor of Winchester and Dartmouth juniorJulie Wadland of Andover have been selected to the All-Ivy Leaguelacrosse team. O'Connor played exceptional defense and led Cornellin draw controls (43) and was second in ground balls (30) and forcedturnovers (19). Wadland played in goal and ranked first in Ivy playin save percentage (.566) and saves per game (9.14) and third ingoals against average (6.95). . . . Babson women's lacrosse team wonits third straight New England Women's and Men's Conference titleand advanced to the second round of the Division 3 NCAA Tournamentbefore being ousted by top-ranked Salisbury. The offensivesparkplugs were junior Anna Collins of Winchester, who pumped in 75goals and assisted on 16 others for 91 points, and senior LindsayBucci of Medford (37-9-46). . . . University of Massachusetts atLowell's Jack Leathersich of Beverly is the Northeast-10 Conferencefreshman Pitcher of the Year. Leathersich went 7-4 and ranked amongthe NE-10 leaders in earned run average (2.18) and strikeouts (63).. . . Jessica Porter of Melrose was named outstanding female athletefor leadership and sportsmanship at Nichols College, where shecaptained both the tennis and lacrosse teams. Porter majored insports management and last summer served an internship for BillieJean King at World Team Tennis in New York. . . . University ofMassachusetts at Amherst senior Whitney Mollica of Windham, N.H.,drove in three runs in a 5-1 win over Washington in the NCAARegionals to become the school's all-time career RBI leader with156. . . . Tufts went 2-2 in the NCAA Division 3 softball WorldSeries to finish the season at 44-3. Among the team's offensiveleaders was senior Danielle Lopez of Danvers, who batted .347 with47 RBIs, five home runs, and a team-high 12 doubles. Lopez startedall 47 of Tufts games. . . . Merrimack's first men's lacrosseappearance in the NCAA Final Four was short and anything but sweet.The Warriors were soundly beaten, 15-5, by perennial power Le Moyne.Merrimack finish the season 14-3 and all three losses were inflictedby Le Moyne - once in the regular season, again in the Northeast-10Conference championship game, and finally in the NCAA semi-finalgame.
